Conservative Pundit Says Video Games Are Making Men “Pathetic”

Wait, what?
According to Game Informer, William Bennett (a well known cultural commentator who served as U.S. Secretary of Education under George H.W. Bush) had some pretty harsh words for men who play video games in his book The Book of Man: Readings on the Path to Manhood. Apparently, guys’ video game habits are a contributing factor to the decline of males in education and the workforce.
In the article, entitled “Why Men Are In Trouble,” Bennett calls out video games in a couple of passages. In the first he writes, “Man’s response has been pathetic. Today, 18-to- 34-year-old men spend more time playing video games a day than 12-to- 17-year-old boys. While women are graduating college and finding good jobs, too many men are not going to work, not getting married and not raising families. Women are beginning to take the place of men in many ways. This has led some to ask: do we even need men?”
He concludes the article by stating “We may need to say to a number of our twenty-something men, ‘Get off the video games five hours a day, get yourself together, get a challenging job and get married.’ It’s time for men to man up.”
Well that’s a bit extreme, I’d like to know where his research came from. Maybe some guys are a bit lazy, but any guy I know who loves to game is currently going to college and working hard to fulfill their dreams of whatever it is they want to be. And they’re all out there trying to date. Besides, girls are gaming too…are they not even considered here or do females balance it better? I love to play but it isn’t effecting what’s important like doing well in school…
I think this is a bit ridiculous, because some people are just plain lazy and you can’t help that. Can’t just use video games as a scapegoat - if it wasn’t Xbox or PlayStation, it’d be their laptops or TV making them procrastinate. Or going out and partying. Seriously now…
